ALBAVIR Tablets ALBAVIR is a fixed-dose dual combination of Abacavir Sulphate and Lamivudine, both carbocyclic synthetic nucleoside analogues with inhibitory activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1). Intracellularly, abacavir and lamivudine are sequentially phosphorylated by cellular enzymes to their active triphosphates, carbovir triphosphate (CBV-TP) and lamivudine triphosphate (3TC-TP), respectively. These active metabolites competitively inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and incorporate into viral DNA, terminating DNA chain elongation. ALBAVIR is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adult and pediatric patients weighing at least 25 kg. Prior to initiating abacavir-containing therapy, screening for the HLA-B*5701 allele is recommended to prevent severe hypersensitivity reactions.
